Prioritizing Jesus Christ Over Idols

Prioritizing Jesus Christ Over Idols

As part of my recovery, especially in the beginning. I had to put an end to reading all kinds of self-help books and magazines because they would send me wandering into darkness. I also had to change what I was watching on video. Watching the wrong movies or short clips that were not positive were destroying my chances of remaining clean and sober. By starting my day with Jesus Christ First! It became easier to understand how much I was safer by feeding my mind with the right information through prayer & meditation. The Bible is very strict about Idolatry and I’m glad that it is because I can’t begin to explain how, especially in 2025, how many times my day would curve the wrong way by reading or watching the wrong materials. By prioritizing Jesus Christ, we are guaranteed to get closer to him, and live more like him in peace and happiness.

Defining Idolatry According to Scripture

The Old Testament explains idolatry very well. It’s basically worshiping a person, object, or idea instead of the true God. This worship isn’t just about kneeling to statues. It also involves our feelings and what we feel loyal to in our hearts. Idolatry is mainly a spiritual issue. It shows that we have misplaced trust, hope, and devotion. How can we stay clean and sober if everything we see, and hear, has negative messages. It’s difficult to find a song or a movie these days without people drowning themselves in alcohol everytime something goes sideways and etcetera.

The Bible clearly says that we should only worship God. The Ten Commandments, which are a key part of the Bible, begin with, “You shall have no other gods before me.” This command shows just how serious idolatry is. It is a sin that goes against God’s true place in our lives. Once I understood how great it feels to worship God & no one else, I started being much more careful with what I read, listened to, watched, hung out with, etcetera. Starting off your day with Jesus Christ & the Bible has its amazing advantages and changes what you give value to, thus keeps you clean and sober!

10 Commandments

In Exodus 20:4–5, Moses talks about idolatry. It says, “You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any shape of anything in heaven above, on the earth below, or in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God.” This shows that God wants us to worship Him only. It is common sense to look up to God before anyone or anything else. It’s the only way an addict can safely make it till the end of the day.

Strategies to Replace Idols with Devotion to Jesus

Make time for God an important part of your everyday life. Set aside some moments for prayer, reading Scripture, and reflecting. Engaging with God’s Word helps us understand His truths. This slowly changes our hearts and keeps us right with Him. As we spend time with Him, we learn more about who He is. We also grow a strong desire for Him in our lives and to become more like Him.

Replacing idols with devotion to Jesus requires a true shift in our focus on a daily basis. Unfortunately for most of us, we need to fall down many times before we can accept this message 100%. We need to release the false hopes that come from the short-lived joys of this world. Instead, we should look for the lasting and eternal joy that comes from our relationship with the living God Jesus Christ. It means seeing how unfulfilling it is to pursue worldly things. We should choose to live for something much greater: a life fully centered on trusting and worshiping The Holy Trinity.

Being in a community with other believers helps us fight against idolatry. Prioritizing Jesus will start to show in your character. When we share our struggles and encourage each other on our faith journeys, we gain support and motivation. This is why 12-step meetings and Bible studies are so important. You’re much less likely to fail in your recovery if you’re held accountable by your new friends who are helping you, and/or the people you’re helping. Together, we can inspire each other to be more devoted to Jesus. This strengthens our commitment to resist idols and live lives that honor and glorify God.

Understanding Idolatry in the Biblical Context

Idolatry is a very serious sin which God does not take lightly, and to show you this, you just need to read for yourself Ezekiel 23:49 which states that we will suffer penalties for this behaviour, and again in 1 Corinthians 6:14 where God simply states to flee from it.

Idolatry used to refer to creating physical images of gods. These days it means a lot more. These could be statues made from wood, stone, or precious metals. People used these idols for worship because they represented gods that they imagined. The Old Testament shows how Israel frequently dealt with problems related to idol worship. This conflict highlights how looking for satisfaction in things instead of in God can lead to spiritual issues and for an addict, relapse.

Idolatry in the Biblical Context

Thinking that things made by humans have special power from God is a big mistake. Prioritize God’s word in the living Bible before anything else. This shows a lack of understanding of God, who is much greater than what we can create. The prophets in the Old Testament were very clear in opposing this practice. They warned us that relying on dead objects and false prophets instead of our true God is not only foolish but can also be harmful.

Historical Examples of Idol Worship in the Bible

The Bible tells several stories about idol worship. These stories serve as warnings for people. A well-known example is the golden calf story. This happened while Israel was leaving Egypt. When Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving God’s Law and the 10 commandments, the Israelites became impatient. They wanted something visible. So, they created a golden calf to worship.

This event highlights how people usually prefer to see physical things instead of having faith in the unseen God. Even when the Israelites witnessed God’s incredible power, they still turned to a created idol. This story warns us about how idolatry can divert even loyal believers from the true God. Praying to a golden calf makes absolutely no sense but the Israelites did it anyway! In 2025 idolatry has turned into all kinds of things or people. Our personal resources, especially man-made materials, will never be sufficient for success; we must accept that depending on God’s power is the only way.

God's Incredible Power

The results of Israel’s idol worship were big. When Moses came down from the mountain, he saw his people celebrating in front of the golden calf. He was angry and upset. So, he broke the idol and told the people they were wrong. This shows how serious God thinks idolatry is. It reminds us to be careful against false gods, no matter if they are from the past or now. I’ve always told myself that I would much rather worship a living God like Jesus Christ than anyone or anything else.

Practical Ways to Prioritize Jesus in Daily Life

Making Jesus a priority in our everyday life requires effort. We have to connect our thoughts, actions, and wishes with his teachings. We have to believe that living this way will not only free us now, but take eternal life more seriously. This also means placing him at the center of our lives and looking for his guidance in all we do. Simply saying Jesus is our Lord is not enough; we must truly work to follow him. Carrying with you a small stack of cards which you can either prepare yourself or you can purchase, which holds your favourite passages from scripture in the Bible is a good way to communicate with God all day long. Personally I place my wallet in my right side pocket and my cards on my left side & whenever I get a chance, I read one of them which keeps me close to God all day!

Tree of Life With Jesus Christ

Having a strong prayer life is very important. Talking to God often helps us feel thankful, recognizing our mistakes, and asking for help when things get tough. When we share our wishes with God through prayer, we let his power help us change. This allows us to align our hearts with his will and set our priorities correctly. After daily prayer & meditation you’ll actually feel “off” if you skip a day. This only proves that the Holy Spirit is always present in our lives.

Identifying Modern Idols in Our Lives

In our culture, materialism and consumerism are all around us. You might feel like you’re idolizing everytime you turn on your TV. If you feel this way, chances are you should re-examine the content you digest. We often see our belongings, social status, and comfort as very important things. The ongoing hunt for money, the desire for the latest gadgets, time spent on  social media can all become idols if we prioritize them over God. God is not asking us to be perfect, but if we can try to aim and be more like Him a bit more each & everyday, then your failures in life will become less & less.

Modern idols are not the same as traditional ones. They often lack a clear shape or form. Instead, they emerge in activities that seem innocent. Tricksters. These activities can gradually distract us from God. To recognize these idols, we must look within ourselves and be honest. Anything that takes our personal dependence on reverence and worship, which should belong only to God, can be considered a false god. With the internet and television these days, there’s more idolatry than there has ever been before! Again, anything we accept into our hearts before the word of God & the Holy Spirit himself is idolatry and will never give you peace like God can!

Holy Spirit

Having career goals is fine. But, if we let these goals take control of our time, priorities, or how we feel about ourselves, they can become problems. Relationships are important, too, but they can also become too important. Too much of anything is not healthy. Even reading the Bible too much is not healthy. Find a healthy balance. if we search for fulfillment and our identity in them instead of in God. We need to ask ourselves if these things bring us closer to God or if they push Him away. We have a jealous and punishing God and the reason for this is to shape us properly for eternal life with him.

Seeking recovery through human strength or looking up to idols anytime will only end in disaster. Our living God through The Life Recovery Bible will set us free.

How Jesus Demonstrated Superiority Over Idols

In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This important statement shows that Jesus is the only connection we have to God. Unlike idols that have no strength, and have sometimes died! Jesus has divine power as the Son of the living God. He gives us the only path to salvation.

The Gospels tell us that Jesus often used his power over nature, illness, and death. By performing these miracles, he shows that he controls everything that was made. This makes it clear that idols are not important when compared to him. The more I realize this, the less I’m affected by mainstream media.

Mainstream Media

Idols often require people to make sacrifices and perform rituals to satisfy them. In contrast, Jesus did something very loving. He became the final sacrifice for all of us. He gave himself on the cross, taking on our sins and reconnecting us with God. This loving act is quite different from what idolatry demands. Idolatry can leave people feeling empty and separate from the true source of life.

Lessons from Christ on Prioritizing God

Jesus taught that we should love God with all our heart, soul, and mind in Matthew 22:37. This love is more important than any other love. He felt that real obedience arises from a heart that loves God, rather than trying to impress Him or any other gods. His lessons moved away from the practice of using idols for self-benefit. By the time I’ve finished reading and learning from my Bibles, I started realizing I did not have the need for self-help books, even if they were Christian-based. Christ Jesus and his living words are plenty and they mean something different and interesting as we gain wisdom & understanding.

Jesus saw the Word of God as the most important guiding authority. He told his followers to turn to the scriptures for truth and direction. He urged them to prioritize God’s will above all else. This focus on Scripture fights against idolatry. It keeps believers grounded in God’s unchanging truth and shields them from shifting cultural trends.

Gods Unchanging Truth in the Bible

In the Gospels, we often see Jesus putting prayer and a close relationship with God the Father first. He showed us why it is crucial to ask for God’s help and strength. By living a life focused on prayer, Jesus set an example for us to follow. He urges us to build a strong, ongoing connection with God. This connection is the key to living a life free from idolatry. Praying a lot & especially everytime something negative pops-up was difficult to do at first, but we get used to it and as a reward, everyday becomes positive!

Conclusion

In conclusion, putting Jesus Christ before idols is not just a religious rule. It is crucial for living a happy and meaningful life. We live in a society that unfortunately puts everyone and anything before Jesus Christ and it should be the opposite. Personally and with experience, I’ve never improved my day by waking up and reading a self-help book. Actually Jesus teaches the opposite. Not self-help but “help others” & by helping others, you end up helping yourself anyway! Only when I’ve started my day with Jesus Christ have I seen improvements. When people understand the dangers of idolatry and view Jesus as the best source of love, guidance, and salvation, they can create a stronger connection with God. This can lead to true spiritual freedom.

Through Jesus’ teachings and actions, we learn to concentrate our faith and devotion on Him. We let His presence guide our thoughts, actions, and decisions. When we choose to put Jesus first in our everyday lives, we can feel a deep peace, purpose, and joy that is much better than the temporary things in life.

Let’s all make an effort to honor God by placing Him at the center of our hearts and minds. We should allow His light to shine through us. This will help others find lasting joy and salvation. In the name of the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit! Amen.
