Introduction

On page SEO is all the work you’re going to put in on the frontend of your website. This is the easiest part of an SEO campaign because you have full control over it. If you know how to type and make sense by studying from the experts in the field, then you’re good to go.

Many website builders or SEO plugins for WordPress will help you along the way by making suggestions as you create your website or even just a new post or page for your website.

On Page SEO doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need to be an expert with 10 years experience to rank your posts in the top 3 positions within Google Search.

Googlebots are very smart and will rank you for a featured snippet even if you didn’t use structured data. As long as you have quality content on your webpage, Google will rank you up quite high and even give you the featured snippet.

I’ve been working with SEO campaigns for a long time now and have helped many websites rank with their chosen keywords so if you’d like to keep reading, I’ll try and give some pointers that you may have known about before!

Metadata

MetaData is important to explain what your webpage, images, or videos are about. Of course the search engines from today are able to do this on their own but if you can give them the information using metadata and structured data, then why not help them. Google will rank you higher in Google Search if you do.

When you’re writing your SEO title & your meta description for the webpage you’re working on. Make sure you add exactly what you’re offering and make your title and description attractive including the keywords your article is targeting.

The alt attributes behind an image are also very important. For example a lot of SEOs will add their keywords to the image descriptions also. This helps even more if you really want to rank.

Videos are different. You don’t really want to host your own videos on your website because it will slow down your website quite a bit so you’ll want to use a URL from YouTube and let them host the heavy files. You can add all the information about the video there and this method is used widely nowadays. Google will easily crawl your video and anything that’s written on that page and give your website credit for it.

You can get a structured data plugin and let that plugin do all the work for you because understanding how to implement structured data is a whole different task on its own but it can be considered on-page SEO work and it can help your webpages rank higher.

Building The #1 Schema Solution

In our case we use the Rank Math SEO plugin for WordPress and it does everything we need when it comes to on-page SEO work.

On Page SEO

Image SEO

When your images are properly optimized to rank in Google Images, your chances of earning backlinks are much higher. If I’m creating a blog post and I do an image search to use in my post, I’m likely to link out to your website in my image caption, thanking you for the image. Not everyone does this but a good percentage of people do. Each image you have that is ranking #1 in Google Image Search is helping your chances of earning backlinks.

Google Image Search

Secondly, image seo helps you rank your webpage for the keywords you are targeting. If you’re writing an article about travelling in Alberta and all your images have alternative text about travelling in Alberta, Google will know very well that your article and all of its content are about travelling in Alberta and your webpage or blog post is most likely to rank for these terms.

Using beautiful images and describing them well with metadata is not only helpful for SEO but increases dwell-time which is even better for SEO. If users are reading your posts and hanging out for a while due to the beautiful images, then you’re most likely going to rank higher for your targeted keywords.

Alternative Text Example

You don’t need to over-optimize though. It’s actually bad for SEO to cram too much meta & structured data. Simply resize the image for it to load fast and add alternative text with the keyword you’re trying to rank for and you’re good to go.

Video SEO

Trying to get your videos to rank higher in Google Video Search has the same benefits that Image SEO has. It’s all about ranking in the top 3 positions and attracting backlinks. Google likes it when you have different kinds of media on your webpages, not just text and images. When you’re using as many kinds of media as possible on your webpages, you have so many ways to explain yourself and there’s something for everyone.

YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine within the world wide web and it’s going to keep growing. Ai really makes it easy to publish videos and many folks would rather watch a video than read an article. Times have changed.

Having #1 ranking videos or a #1 ranking YouTube channel is great. You can redirect traffic to your website quite easily.

Generative AI Videos

There are so many tools now to create videos easily and you don’t even need to use your own face anymore. AI does it all for you and all you need to do is type a script. Companies like InVideo AI make this quite easy!

Keywords

Keywords are definitely a big part of any SEO campaign strategy. Even though Google knows what keywords were trying to rank for, it’s still very normal to let them know through text, image attributes, SEO titles and meta-descriptions and so on. We don’t want to be keyword-stuffing like in the old days but we do want to add keywords to our website naturally!

Keyword Stuffing

A good way to check if you’re keyword-stuffing either by mistake or not is to view any webpage you want and use the commands to search the page which is Control+F and if you have the same keyword a million times then you should get to editing your text. Google will label your webpage as spam if this is the case.

Choosing long-tailed keywords is sometimes a good way to go since they’re searched less and not as difficult to rank for. You’ll still get plenty of people finding your webpage and possibly contacting you for the service you might be offering and it’s just a lot easier than trying to outrank the larger corporations that have unlimited budgets and resources.

Long Tailed Keywords

Image a website with a URL like this: “https://example.com/90878**76=)))/webtack**/who-knows/” Not only does this look bad for a potential client but Googlebots will get confused as well. There are permalinks settings in most website builders and anyone building a custom website should know how to create an SEO-friendly URL for your webpages.

It’s true that many web developers do not know anything about URL structure/permalinks but please make sure you bring it to their attention while they’re building your website. Webney Website Design will be happy to help you with a new website design project. Contact us if needed!

Permalinks are also sometimes called slugs. Thanks to Ryan Moreno for creating this great post about Permalinks & Slugs. Make sure your permalinks, slugs, or URLs are easy to read for both humans and search engine bots. This is definitely a ranking factor for on-page SEO.

Internal Links

Having an internal link strategy can work miracles for your SEO. Once your website gets large enough. You’ll obviously have a few posts doing better than others and that’s when a link from inside your website can be worth more than an inbound link coming in from another website. You also have the luxury of having full control over the anchor text which is a big deal.

The more you post and link to your money page, the higher it will rank in Google Search.

Money

You also want to create an informative internal link map within your website. Helping readers go where they want to go. The more posts and articles you have ranking #1 in Google, the more your website is becoming popular. People will follow your internal links because they trust your brand and want to be educated there. That’s the whole point of having a reputable website. Keep posting the best content you possibly can and your blog will be very successful. I’ve noticed the largest brands don’t even link out anymore, they have all the content themselves and only link to inner-pages!

External Links

The trick with linking out. The best way that linking out can help you is if you link out to a very reputable website that backs up exactly what you’re talking about. For example, you might have a few hundred words about seafood and the best thing you can do is link out to another website which has done the research and says that the exact percentage of people eating seafood these days is whatever% You can even add an image that backs up your words as well. Google crawls your links and image attributes and gives your article value and trust signals. Using statistics to backup your articles is the best way to earn people’s trust, including Googlebot.

Googlebot

After your blog is 5 years old and your domain authority is way up there because you actually have dozens of posts ranking #1 then you’ll not need to link out so much because it’ll be way more valuable for you to link to your inner-pages.

External links are a major reason a lot of websites are ranking in Google Search. Search engine crawlers follow links from reputable websites and that’s how they rank other webpages for the anchor text the link is coming from.

Wikipedia External Links

Wikipedia is considered one of the most reputable websites online edited by many experts in over a thousand fields. Linking out to Wikipedia to backup your findings/facts is a very good idea.

Heading Tags

Headers have a lot more to do with organizing your content than just the sizing and appearance. The heading tags should be well organized to help search engines understand what’s important on your website. John Mueller from Google mentions that header elements are a “very strong signal” for Googlebots to understand your content / on page SEO.

Your H1 tag is used for the webpage’s title and you should normally only use one H1 header element per page which should also contain the keyword you want to rank for.

How Important is Your H1 Tag

H2 & H3 tags are the second most important and can be used more than once. For example an H2 separates one section of the webpage from another very well while H3’s do the same thing but don’t give as strong of a signal as H2’s.

H4’s are usually used for lists within a paragraph uner and H3.

H5 & H6’s are not used very often but you can click here to find out more about them.

Blog Posting

Blogging and posting articles is my personal favorite way to get our clients ranking well in Google Search. The more posts you have raking in the top3 for as many competitive keywords as possible, the better. If you know enough about a topic then you should try and blog about it, even if you’re not the best at writing for an audience. Google loves fresh content from a new voice/style.

There’s over 600 million blogs online so Google loves to see something / someone new.

Over 600 Million Blogs Online

It takes practice to get good at blogging beautiful you’re able to outrank your competitors because your website offers so much more than the other, then it’s worth it.

The best way to prepare a blog post is to grab the keyword you want to rank for and do a Google search for that keyword. Open the top 10 websites ranking for that keywords and see what they did. Check Everything. There are a lot of keyword research tools to check if it’s worth typing about the keyword you have in mind but most people know what their potential clients are typing into Google to find what they want. Some of these tools can be helpful but many times common sense is all you need.

A popular method is to pick and grab the paragraph topics from the top ranking websites that you found and write your own version of each one. Like I said, Google loves a fresh voice so go ahead and start writing and learn how to link out to relevant articles online to backup your findings. It’s important to link out to another website that has a good reputation and is saying the same things as you are, or at least along the same line as you are.

Sales Pages

Typing up a great sales page that is going to convert website visitors into clients is a lot like writing a blog post but in this case you want to have a natural sales approach and also add call to action buttons and hyperlinks.

A sales page can have things like your pricing. Images of some of your previous work. Reviews from past clients & other elements of that nature. You also want your sales page to look beautiful and better than your direct competitor.
